PumpWatt vs AAA gas prices: the average and the answer

AAA is where the news gets its number: the daily average for the country, every state and the big metros, and its app shows nearby station prices and EV chargers. PumpWatt turns the average into an answer: which station near you costs your car least today.

The average is not on any sign

AAA says your state averages $3.50 today. The three stations you actually pass show $3.39, $3.49 and $3.59. The average tells you the middle one is normal. It cannot tell you that the $3.39 is 2 miles off your way and costs about $0.54 to reach. On a 14 gallon fill that leaves $0.86 of the $1.40 the sign promised.

PumpWatt keeps the average as the yardstick and ranks the three real stations underneath it.

What each costs

PumpWatt: free, no sign-up, no card. Some links pay us; that never changes which station wins.

AAA: the gas price averages at gasprices.aaa.com are free to anyone. The AAA Mobile app is free to download and its gas finder works without a membership; roadside help and member discounts need a membership, priced by your local club.

Where the numbers differ: AAA prints a daily average; PumpWatt's area number is the weekly government survey, dated, with a year of history behind it. Neither one is a pump you can drive to.
