Gas station rewards programs compared: cents per gallon, and when they beat a cheaper sign

Every big chain has a free program that takes 3 to 10 cents off a gallon, and every one only works at its own pumps. PumpWatt already knows these programs: tick your program in Stack your savings, on the home page, and the cents come off before the ranking. A Shell with 5 cents back can beat a cheaper sign next door, or lose to it.

Five cents back, eight cents cheaper across the street

Shell shows $3.49 and takes 5¢ off with Fuel Rewards, so you pay $3.44. The Marathon across the street shows $3.41 with nothing to join. On a 14 gallon fill the Marathon wins by $0.42, and PumpWatt ranks it first even though the Shell row wears the rewards tag.

Turn it around and the Shell is $3.45 with 5¢ off: now it pays $3.40 and wins by 14¢ a fill. The tag is not the answer; the ranking is.

Cents per gallon as each program publishes them, via The Points Guy's fuel loyalty roundup, checked September 17, 2026; Circle K and 7Rewards from their own pages, October 3, 2026. Tiers change; PumpWatt keeps its own copy per brand and dates it.

What each costs

PumpWatt: free, no sign-up, no card. Some links pay us; that never changes which station wins.

All of them: free to join. Some pay more with the brand's credit card or a grocery partner, and a few (Sunoco, Circle K) need the app at the pump.

The catch: five cents at Shell is worth nothing if the Marathon across the street is eight cents cheaper on the sign. That comparison is the one thing none of the programs can make.

Program terms from each brand's own page, checked September 17, 2026.

Questions people ask

Which gas rewards program saves the most?

Love's, at 10 to 25 cents, but only at highway travel centers. For everyday driving Shell Fuel Rewards and Sunoco reach 10 cents or more with their partner boosts; most others sit at 3 to 6 cents. The bigger question is whether your usual brand is the cheap one on your street.

Do gas rewards programs stack with Upside or a credit card?

Yes. The brand's cents come off at the pump, a cash-back app pays on top, and your card's percent applies to what is left. PumpWatt's Stack your savings panel adds the three together for each station.

Is PumpWatt connected to any of these programs?

No. PumpWatt is independent and published by Anvimo LLC. Every program named here is a trademark of its owner. Links to a program's sign-up page may pay PumpWatt; that never changes which station wins.
