The sign is not the bill

GasBuddy shows $3.39 two miles away and $3.49 on your corner. On a 14 gallon fill the cheaper sign saves $1.40. The four extra miles cost about $0.54 in gas at 26 mpg, plus ten minutes. PumpWatt counts both and calls it: here, the corner wins by a nickel.

That is the whole difference. GasBuddy is the price list. PumpWatt is the decision.

What each costs

PumpWatt: free, no sign-up, no card. Some links pay us; that never changes which station wins.

GasBuddy: the app is free. Its Pay with GasBuddy+ card is free and takes 3¢ off a gallon. The Plus plan, $7.99 a month or $89 a year, takes 20¢ off your first 50 gallons a month, then 5¢. Premium, $9.99 a month or $99 a year, adds roadside help.

Is Plus worth it? Against the free card it pays for itself at about 47 gallons a month. A typical driver, 12,000 miles a year at 26 mpg, buys about 38, so for most it does not.

Is Premium worth it? It charges $9.99 a month for the same 20¢ rate, so it takes 50 gallons just to earn back its own fee, more than that typical month's 38.

Questions people ask

Is PumpWatt a GasBuddy alternative?

For choosing where to fill up, yes. PumpWatt compares the stations you actually drive past once your rewards card, cashback apps and the drive there are counted. For a live map of every station around you, GasBuddy covers more stations because its drivers report prices all day.

Is GasBuddy Plus worth it?

Only if you buy a lot of gas. The Plus plan costs $7.99 a month and takes 20 cents off your first 50 gallons each month, against 3 cents with GasBuddy's free card. That extra 17 cents pays for the plan at about 47 gallons a month. A typical driver buys about 38 a month (12,000 miles a year at 26 mpg), so for most drivers it does not.

Is GasBuddy Premium worth it?

Premium costs $9.99 a month for the same 20 cents a gallon as Plus. That takes 50 gallons just to earn back the fee, more than the 38 gallons a typical driver buys in a month. PumpWatt costs nothing, so there is no fee to earn back.

Why do GasBuddy prices sometimes look wrong?

They are typed in by drivers, so a price can sit for hours after the sign changed. PumpWatt keeps a price only while it still agrees with what the street is charging, drops anything over a week old, and lets you fix a wrong one with one tap.
